About Great Battle V, The (japan)
Great Battle V came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed and published by Banpresto. It was part of their long running Compati Hero series in Japan, a crossover franchise that mashed up different characters. This particular entry stood out because it was a top down run and gun shooter, a different style from some of the earlier games in the line.
You control a character from a selection of SD, or super deformed, heroes, moving through stages screen by screen. Your main goal is simply to survive the onslaught of enemies and defeat the stage boss. The core loop involves running around the arena, dodging a constant barrage of enemy fire, and shooting back with your own weapon. You can pick up power ups to change your shot type, adding some variety to the combat. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is relentless, demanding quick reflexes and good positioning to avoid getting overwhelmed. It feels like a constant, chaotic scramble for survival against waves of enemies.
