I picked up Gourmet Sentai Bara Yarou a while back, a 1995 Super Nintendo release from Virgin Interactive. It came out during that later part of the SNES lifespan when developers were really pushing what the hardware could do visually. You don't hear much about it, which is a shame because it has a unique charm that sets it apart from the more common platformers and RPGs of the era.

You control a team of chefs who explore levels screen by screen, battling bizarre food-based monsters. Your main goal is to gather specific gourmet ingredients by defeating these enemies and navigating environmental puzzles. The combat is a mix of close-range attacks with kitchen utensils and throwing collected ingredients as projectiles. The pacing is deliberate, requiring you to manage your limited inventory of food items carefully, and the difficulty can be surprisingly sharp in some sections. It feels like a strange, methodical cooking adventure where every new screen presents a fresh culinary obstacle to overcome.
