About Gon (japan)
Gon came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed by Tose. It was one of many licensed games from that era, based on the manga about a small, feisty dinosaur. You don't see many games where you play as a tiny dinosaur who can't be killed, so it always stood out to me on the shelf.
You control Gon, a tiny orange dinosaur, navigating through side scrolling levels. Your main goal is simply to get to the end of each stage. Gon cannot die, so the challenge comes from figuring out how to progress. His primary ability is a powerful bite that can defeat enemies and break certain blocks. You also use his tail to swing from specific points, and you can perform a short charge to build up speed for jumps or to break tougher obstacles. The game is methodical; you often stop to assess which of your abilities will get you past a particular barrier. It feels like a puzzle platformer where the solution is usually right in front of you if you experiment a little. Playing it is a calm, almost meditative experience of trial and error.
