Gokinjo Boukentai is one of those obscure Super Famicom RPGs that never made it outside Japan, which is a shame because it’s got this weird, cozy charm to it. Based on a manga by Sudou Masumi, it’s got that classic 90s anime aesthetic—big eyes, spiky hair, the works. You start off in this small town, and right away, the vibe is more slice-of-life than your usual save-the-world epic.
Combat’s turn-based but with a twist: positioning matters, almost like a light tactical RPG. Your party members have these quirky personalities, and the dialogue’s got that old-school humor where everyone’s either shouting or being sarcastic. The music’s surprisingly catchy too—one of those soundtracks that sticks in your head after you turn it off.
It’s not the deepest RPG out there, but if you’re into retro stuff with personality, it’s a neat little time capsule. Just don’t expect a fan translation anytime soon.
