About Gegege No Kitarou
I picked up Gegege No Kitarou for the Super Nintendo back in 1993, a game published by Bandai. It was part of that wave of Japanese titles that didn't always make it overseas, based on a popular manga and anime series about yokai, or Japanese spirits. On the SNES, it fit right in with the platformers and action games of the era, offering a side scrolling adventure that felt familiar yet distinctly its own.
You control Kitaro, a one eyed yokai boy, navigating through stages filled with other supernatural creatures. Your main goal is to progress through each level, defeating the boss yokai at the end. The gameplay involves standard jumping and attacking, but Kitaro has a unique projectile: he can fire his detached geta, or wooden sandal, as a weapon. You explore screen by screen, often in a linear fashion, dealing with enemy patterns and environmental obstacles. The pacing is methodical, requiring you to learn attack timings and enemy placements, and the difficulty can be quite sharp, especially during boss encounters. Playing it feels like a straightforward, sometimes challenging trip through a folkloric world.
