About Gegege No Kitarou - Youkai Donjara (japan) (st)
Gegege No Kitarou - Youkai Donjara came out in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Bandai. It was part of a wave of games based on popular manga and anime, fitting right into the SNES library's mix of action and adventure titles from that period.
You control Kitarou, a yokai boy, navigating a series of side scrolling stages. Your main goal is to fight through levels filled with other yokai, using Kitarou's signature attack, his Hair Needle, to defeat them. The game involves screen by screen exploration, where you clear each area of enemies before moving on, and you collect power ups to enhance your attacks. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be unforgiving with enemy placements and limited continues. Playing it feels like a straightforward, sometimes punishing, test of your timing and persistence.
