About Gegege No Kitarou - Fukkatsu! Tenma Daiou (japan)
Gegege no Kitarou: Fukkatsu! Tenma Daiou came out in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan, developed and published by Bandai. It was part of that wave of games based on popular anime and manga, a familiar sight on the SNES, and it captured the show's spooky, folkloric style pretty well for its time.
You control Kitarou, a one-eyed yokai boy, navigating side-scrolling stages. Your main goal is to stop the resurrected demon king Tenma by fighting through levels filled with other monsters. You attack with your detached, projectile-firing hair, and you can also collect power-ups to enhance your shots. The game uses a screen-by-screen progression, locking you into an area until you defeat all the enemies there. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving with precise platforming required. Playing it feels like a straightforward, challenging run through a haunted Japanese folktale.
