I first played Garou Densetsu, known as Fatal Fury, on the Super Nintendo in 1991. It was a conversion of SNK's 1991 arcade game, brought to the console by publisher Takara. On the SNES, it was one of the earlier one-on-one fighters, arriving before the genre became a staple on the system.

You control one of several martial artists, like Terry Bogard, fighting through a series of opponents in the King of Fighters tournament. The main goal is to defeat all rivals and the final boss, Geese Howard. The game introduced a two-plane system; you can jump between the foreground and background to dodge attacks. Special moves require precise joystick motions and button presses, like Terry's Rising Tackle. Matches are fast, and the computer opponents can be unforgiving, especially later on. It feels like a direct, challenging arcade experience condensed for home play.
