Ganbare Goemon 3 is one of those SNES games that just oozes personality—you’re immediately thrown into this weird, vibrant Japan-meets-steampunk world where you’re bouncing between rooftops, smacking enemies with a pipe, and occasionally hopping into a giant robot for no apparent reason. The controls feel a little stiff at first, but once you get used to Goemon’s weird momentum, it clicks.
What really stands out is how bizarre it all is. One minute you’re fighting a sumo wrestler, the next you’re racing a turtle or dodging giant rolling sushi. The pixel art is packed with little details, like NPCs doing random dances in the background, and the soundtrack is full of those classic SNES-era earworms. It’s not the tightest platformer out there, but the sheer charm makes up for it.
If you’ve got a soft spot for retro games that don’t take themselves too seriously, this one’s a blast.
