Ganbare Goemon - Yuki Hime Kyuushutsu Emaki is one of those weird, charming SNES games that never made it outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s a blast. You play as Goemon, the blue-haired, pipe-wielding weirdo, bouncing around feudal Japan with his buddy Ebisumaru to rescue a snow princess. The whole thing feels like a fever dream: you’ll ride giant cats, throw coins at enemies, and occasionally stumble into these bizarre first-person dungeon sections that make zero sense but are weirdly fun.
The controls take a second to get used to—Goemon’s jump is floaty, and Ebisumaru moves like he’s drunk—but once it clicks, the platforming feels surprisingly smooth. The art style’s packed with little details, like enemies wearing kabuki masks or townspeople bowing as you run past. And the music? Absolute bangers, especially the overworld theme.
It’s not perfect (some of those mini-games are rough), but if you’re into quirky retro action with a side of Japanese folklore, this one’s a hidden gem. Just don’t ask me to explain the plot.
