Ganbare! Daiku No Gen-san is one of those weird, charming SNES games that never made it outside Japan. You play as Gen, a carpenter with a hammer who somehow ends up fighting off everything from angry construction workers to giant sushi chefs. The controls are a little stiff at first, but once you get used to the way Gen swings his hammer, it’s oddly satisfying—especially when you start bouncing enemies off walls like pinballs.
The levels are packed with weird little details, like breakable vending machines and hidden shortcuts. I remember getting stuck on the second stage for way too long before realizing you could actually smash certain platforms to create new paths. The music’s got that classic SNES charm too—upbeat and slightly goofy, which fits the whole "carpenter brawler" vibe perfectly.
It’s not the deepest game, but there’s something about the sheer absurdity of it that makes it hard to put down. Definitely a hidden gem if you’re into quirky retro action.
