About First Samurai
First Samurai came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, published by Kemco. It was part of that early wave of SNES games that tried to blend different genres, a side scrolling action game with some light exploration and role playing elements. You don't hear about it as much as some other titles from that year, but it had its own distinct look and feel.
You control a lone samurai on a quest to rescue a kidnapped princess. The game plays out screen by screen; you move through forests, caves, and castles, fighting monsters with your sword and a bow. You collect power ups to strengthen your character and search for three sacred artifacts to progress. The pacing can be slow as you backtrack through areas, and the difficulty is unforgiving, with precise platforming and enemies that respawn quickly. Playing it feels like a deliberate, sometimes frustrating test of your patience and reflexes.
