Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu came out for the Super Nintendo in 1996, developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. It was part of that late SNES wave of deep, complex strategy games that really pushed what the system could do. You don't see many games with this much narrative and mechanical ambition on the platform.

You control a large cast of characters on grid-based battlefields, moving them one by one to attack enemy soldiers and seize objectives. The main goal is to guide your army through a sprawling generational war, making sure your key units survive each conflict. Signature mechanics include the weapon triangle, which creates a rock-paper-scissors dynamic between swords, lances, and axes, and a relationship system where units fighting side-by-side can fall in love and produce children who become playable in the second half of the story. The pacing is deliberate, and the permanent death of units makes every decision feel heavy. It feels like conducting a careful, often tense, military campaign where every move has lasting consequences.
