About Fifa '97 - Gold Edition (europe) (en,fr,de,es,it,sv)
FIFA '97 Gold Edition came out for the Super Nintendo in 1996, a time when the 16-bit console was still holding its own. EA Canada developed it, and the European version included menus and commentary in several languages, which was a nice touch for playing with friends from different places. It was one of the later football games on the system, arriving as the industry was starting to shift toward newer, more powerful hardware.
You control a team of eleven players, switching between them to pass, tackle, and shoot. The main objective is to outscore your opponent within the match time. A couple of its defining mechanics are the through-pass system, which lets you lead a teammate with a well-timed ball into space, and the ability to perform sliding tackles and headers with a dedicated button. The game moves at a brisk pace, and while the computer can be challenging, it feels fair. Dribbling past a defender and slotting a shot into the corner of the net provides a genuine sense of satisfaction.
