Earthbound - Hat Quest is one of those weird, wonderful SNES RPGs that just oozes charm. You start off picking between three oddball characters—a kid with a baseball cap, a girl in a floppy sunhat, and this little dude in a propeller beanie—and right away, the game throws bizarre enemies at you like sentient traffic cones and angry mailboxes. The combat’s simple but satisfying, and half the fun is seeing what ridiculous dialogue pops up when you use different hats as special abilities.
The music’s got that classic Earthbound vibe—kinda cheerful but with this offbeat, slightly melancholic edge. And the towns? Packed with NPCs who say the dumbest, most endearing things. One minute you’re fighting a gang of rogue garden gnomes, the next you’re helping a depressed clown find his lost balloon animal. It shouldn’t work, but it totally does.
If you’ve played the original Earthbound, you’ll spot a ton of little nods, but even if you haven’t, it’s just a solid, weird little adventure. Just don’t expect anything to make too much sense—that’s part of the charm.
