EarthBound came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Ape Inc. and HAL Laboratory. It was part of that era when RPGs on the console were experimenting with more contemporary settings instead of traditional fantasy. You don't play as a knight or a wizard; you're a kid named Ness living in a suburb that feels familiar, at least until the aliens show up.

You control Ness and eventually a small party of friends, exploring the world screen by screen. Your main goal is to travel across the land and collect eight sacred melodies to stop the cosmic threat, Giygas. The combat is turn-based, but it uses a rolling health meter, so if you take a big hit you can potentially heal before your life fully drains away. You also have to manage your inventory carefully, as your space is limited and you'll be buying everything from baseball bats to hamburgers from local shops. The game has a deliberate pace, and some areas can be surprisingly difficult, demanding that you stop to grind for experience and better gear. Despite the odd challenges, moving through its quirky world and encountering its strange characters creates a unique, lasting feeling of a personal, slightly off-kilter adventure.
