You control a boy named Ness and his growing group of friends, traveling across the land to stop an alien threat. Your health rolls down like a counter after you take damage, giving you a chance to heal before it hits zero, and you can sometimes win battles automatically if you're much stronger than the enemy. The pacing is deliberate, with a fair amount of backtracking and some surprisingly tough enemy encounters. It feels like a long, personal road trip filled with odd moments and genuine stakes.
