EarthBound Battler is one of those SNES games that feels like it shouldn’t work—but somehow, it absolutely does. You start off as this kid with a baseball bat, fighting sentient stop signs and piles of vomit (yeah, really), and the whole thing just gets weirder from there. The combat’s turn-based, but with this weird rolling health meter that makes even basic fights feel tense.

The writing’s the real star, though. Every NPC has something bizarre to say, and the humor’s so dry you’ll either laugh or just sit there blinking. I remember getting stuck for way too long because I forgot to call my dad to save—classic EarthBound.

It’s not for everyone, but if you like RPGs with personality (and a soundtrack full of weird, crunchy synths), this one’s a trip worth taking. Just don’t expect it to make sense.
