ESPN Baseball Tonight on SNES is one of those mid-90s baseball games that somehow nails the feel of the sport without overcomplicating things. The pixelated players have this great chunky animation when they swing, and the crack of the bat sounds way more satisfying than it has any right to. I always loved how the fielders actually dive for catches instead of just gliding toward the ball.
Pitching feels surprisingly tactical—you’ve got to mix up fastballs, curves, and changeups, or the AI will start teeing off on you. And yeah, the graphics are obviously dated now, but there’s something charming about the way the crowd just bobs up and down in the stands like a sea of blocky little fans. It’s not the deepest baseball sim out there, but it’s got that pick-up-and-play vibe that makes it perfect for quick games when you just want to unwind.
Fair warning though: the computer gets weirdly good at stealing bases if you’re not paying attention.
