E.V.O. came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Almanic. It was one of those games that felt different from the usual platformers and RPGs of the time, offering a strange and ambitious concept instead of familiar fantasy or sci-fi settings.

You control a creature on a very long journey, starting as a simple fish in the ocean. Your goal is to survive and evolve across different eras, from the primordial sea to the age of dinosaurs and eventually to mammals. The core activity is eating other creatures to gain evolution points; you then spend these points at evolution spots to change your body parts, like a stronger jaw, faster fins, or eventually legs to walk on land. The game plays out screen by screen, with you navigating environments, avoiding predators, and hunting for food. It can be slow and unforgiving, as a single mistake can mean losing a lot of progress. The feeling of gradually transforming your creature from a vulnerable scrap of life into a dominant land animal is deeply satisfying and unique.
