Dungeon Master came to the Super Nintendo in 1993, a conversion of an older computer game by FTL Games. It was a different kind of adventure for the console, a first person crawl that felt more like a PC RPG than the action focused titles common on the system at the time. You managed a party of four characters, not just one hero, which immediately set it apart.

You control the party as a single unit, moving them one square at a time through a labyrinth of stone corridors and deadly traps. The main goal is straightforward: delve deep, survive the monsters, and find your way out. You fight in real time, swinging your sword or firing a bow by clicking icons, while also constantly managing your food, water, and light sources. The game does not hold your hand; you have to map the dungeons yourself on graph paper, and the puzzles can be unforgiving. Progress is slow and methodical, a test of your patience and memory as much as your combat skill. It feels like a genuine expedition into a hostile, unknown place where every decision carries weight.
