Dungeon Keeper is a real-time strategy game released in 1997 for MS-DOS. It was developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts. The game presents a twist on the typical fantasy genre by casting the player in the role of an evil dungeon keeper.

Players manage their dungeon from an isometric overhead view, issuing commands to creatures and directing construction. The primary worker unit is the Imp, a loyal creature that excavates new tunnels, claims territory for the dungeon, and mines gold. Beyond giving general orders, the player can directly pick up and place Imps or other minions near specific tasks to expedite their completion. A core early objective in most levels is to expand the dungeon to attract various powerful creatures, who arrive through a portal. These minions can then be assigned to train, increasing their power, or to research spells and items, all of which require a steady supply of gold to fund and to keep the creatures content.

The ultimate goal is to defeat the level's opposition, which may consist of invading heroes or rival dungeon keepers. While heroes have finite numbers, enemy keepers operate under similar rules to the player, building their own dungeons. After all enemies are vanquished, the player can optionally continue developing their dungeon before choosing to advance to the next mission. A unique feature allows the player to temporarily adopt a first-person perspective to see the dungeon directly through the eyes of any controlled creature.
