The gameplay is divided into two distinct phases. The primary strategic phase involves managing diplomatic relations with various factions, such as Lord Holders and Craftsmasters, to secure alliances against the Thread. Players can organize events like Hatchings or weddings to improve relations with specific leaders. If negotiations fail, players may engage in duels to incapacitate opposing leaders, though this carries diplomatic risks. The passage of time occurs in real-time during this phase, but the game can be paused. Conclaves, triggered by events like a Weyrleader's death, can cancel ongoing diplomatic activities for certain groups.

The secondary phase is Thread fighting, which occurs annually. In this action-oriented segment, players directly control dragonriders to intercept falling Thread in the sky, using the dragons' fiery breath to destroy it before it reaches the ground. If Thread is missed, it can damage the dragon or infest the land below. Players can adjust the difficulty of these sequences or disable them entirely at the start of a game. A session concludes after a set number of turns, when a player accumulates a required number of Victory Points from alliances, or when a specified number of Holds become infested by Thread.
