I first played Dragon's Lair on the Super Nintendo in 1993, a version published by Elite Systems. It was a strange release for the console, a direct adaptation of the early 80s arcade game that felt like an interactive cartoon in an era dominated by sprite-based platformers and RPGs.

You control the knight Dirk the Daring, and your goal is to rescue Princess Daphne from a dragon's castle. The game plays out screen by screen; each new scene presents a threat, and you must press the correct direction or button at the exact moment to make Dirk dodge, jump, or swing his sword. There is no free exploration, just a series of timed reactions. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is unforgiving, as a single mistimed input leads to an immediate, often gruesome, death. Playing it feels like trying to survive a frantic, animated obstacle course where you must memorize the path to succeed.
