Dragon Slayer: Eiyuu Densetsu came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Nihon Falcom. It was part of a wave of Japanese RPGs that defined the SNES library, a time when many developers were exploring how to bring complex computer RPGs to a home console. This game is actually the sixth entry in the Dragon Slayer series and the first to carry The Legend of Heroes title, which would later become its own long running franchise.

You control a young hero on a quest to defeat an evil dragon. The game is played from a top down perspective, and you explore the world screen by screen, navigating towns, fields, and dungeons. Combat is turn based and happens directly on the map; when you encounter an enemy, the game pauses and you input commands to attack with your sword or use magic. Your main goal is to gather the scattered pieces of a legendary sword, which involves talking to villagers for clues and delving into monster filled caves. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be steep, requiring careful management of your health and resources between save points. Playing it feels like slowly unraveling a classic, text heavy adventure where every new discovery matters.
