Dragon Ball Z Super Gokuden: Kakusei Hen came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by TOSE. It was part of that wave of mid-90s Japanese RPGs that tried to condense a sprawling anime story into a single cartridge. You don't see many people talking about it now, but back then, if you were a fan of the series, it was one of the few ways to play through the Saiyan and Frieza Sagas on your SNES.

You control Goku, and later other Z-fighters, navigating the world from an overhead view. The main goal is to follow the story beats from the anime, fighting key villains and training to get stronger. Exploration is screen by screen, and much of the game is spent in menu-driven training sessions to raise your stats, like increasing your power level or learning new techniques such as the Spirit Bomb. Random enemy encounters trigger a first-person perspective battle where you select attacks and special moves from a list. The pacing can be slow, with a lot of grinding required to progress, and the difficulty spikes at certain boss fights feel very much of that era. Playing it feels like methodically working through a checklist of the anime's greatest hits, which is satisfying if you know exactly what you're getting into.
