About Dragon Ball Z - Ultime Menace
Dragon Ball Z: Ultime Menace came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, a time when the console was full of games based on popular anime. It was published by Bandai, a company known for its licensed titles. This one follows the story of the Garlic Jr. saga, a part of the DBZ storyline that was not in the original manga, which makes it stand out from other games covering the more famous Frieza or Cell arcs.
You control Gohan, and sometimes Piccolo, as you explore areas screen by screen, fighting random enemies to build up your power level. The main goal is to stop Garlic Jr. and his Spice Boys from plunging the world into darkness. The combat is menu based; you select attacks like the Masenko or Special Beam Cannon, watching the damage play out. You also fly around the world map, a feature that felt expansive for a 16 bit game, searching for the next story trigger. The pacing can be slow, with a fair amount of grinding needed to become strong enough for the boss fights. It feels like a straightforward, almost methodical journey through a specific piece of Dragon Ball Z history.
