Dragon Ball Z - Super Gokuuden Totsugeji is one of those SNES games that just feels like DBZ—right down to the pixelated Kamehameha waves and Vegeta’s smug little sprite. It’s not your typical fighting game, though. You’ll bounce between side-scrolling brawls, turn-based ki battles, and these weird but kinda cool card-based power-up systems. The first time I played, I totally botched my card picks and got wrecked by Raditz, which… yeah, that tracks.

What’s fun is how it mashes up different gameplay styles while sticking close to the Saiyan and Frieza sagas. The sprites are chunky and colorful, and there’s something satisfying about charging up Goku’s Spirit Bomb with button mashing. It’s janky in that very 90s way—don’t expect smooth combos—but the energy (and the ridiculous power-up screams) makes it feel like you’re flipping through an old VHS tape of the anime.

If you’re into retro DBZ games, this one’s a time capsule worth dusting off.
