Dragon Ball Z: Super Butouden came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Tose and published by Bandai. It was one of the early fighting games on the system, arriving when developers were still figuring out how to translate complex anime action into a 16-bit format. This was the first dedicated Dragon Ball Z fighting game, and it never saw an official release in North America, which made it a sought-after import for fans at the time.

You control characters like Goku and Vegeta in one-on-one battles across large, multi-plane stages. The main objective is to deplete your opponent's health bar using a mix of physical attacks and signature energy projectiles, such as the Kamehameha. A small radar beneath the health bars helps you track positioning on the expansive stages, since characters can fight on the ground or leap into the air. Special moves require precise button inputs and can be countered by blocking, dodging, or even entering a beam struggle where you mash buttons to overpower your opponent's attack. The pacing is fast, and the computer can be punishing if you don't learn to manage your ki gauge for specials. It feels like a direct, hands-on brawl that captures the kinetic energy of the show's fights.
