Donald Duck Mahou No Boushi is one of those weirdly charming SNES gems that slipped under the radar for a lot of people. You play as Donald—no pants, no problem—wielding a magic hat that lets you shoot fireballs, turn into a spring-loaded jack-in-the-box (seriously), and even summon a tornado. The first level throws you right into this pastel-colored, slightly off-kilter Disney world where pumpkins have teeth and brooms come to life.

It’s got that classic 90s platformer feel—jumping on enemies, collecting gems—but with this bizarre twist where you’re constantly swapping spells mid-level. Took me a few tries to realize the fire spell melts ice blocks, and yeah, I definitely faceplanted into a pit before figuring out the spring jump. The music’s got that peppy Capcom sound, all bouncy brass and xylophones, which somehow makes it even funnier when Donald gets smacked by a sentient candlestick.

If you’re into retro games with personality (and don’t mind some janky hitboxes), this one’s a trip. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand—that magic hat’s got a learning curve.
