About David Crane's Amazing Tennis (japan)
David Crane's Amazing Tennis came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Imagineering Inc. It was one of the earlier sports titles on the system, arriving at a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate real world sports into a satisfying 16 bit experience. This game attempted to stand out with its specific approach to the court.
You control a single tennis player, moving them around the court to return the ball. The main goal is to win matches by outscoring your opponent in sets. Its signature mechanics include a unique perspective that uses foreground and background layers to simulate a sense of depth, a power meter for applying spin to your shots, and the ability to charge up for a more powerful return. The pacing is fairly quick, and the computer opponent can be challenging, especially as you progress. It feels like a thoughtful, almost technical take on tennis where positioning and timing your charged shots matter more than pure speed.
