About David Crane's Amazing Tennis (europe)
David Crane's Amazing Tennis came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by Imagineering Inc. It was one of the earlier sports titles on the platform, arriving at a time when developers were still exploring how to translate real world athletics into a 16 bit format. The game did not have the same marketing push as some of the bigger franchises, but it carved out its own space for players looking for a tennis option.
You control a single tennis player on the court, moving them to intercept the ball and swing with different shot types. The main objective is to win matches by outscoring your opponent in sets of games. A couple of its notable mechanics include the use of a foreground and background plane to simulate a sense of depth on the court, and the ability to put spin on the ball to alter its trajectory after it bounces. The pacing is generally brisk, though the computer opponent can be quite relentless on higher difficulty settings, demanding precise positioning and timing. Playing it feels like a constant back and forth of positioning and anticipation, where a well placed shot is genuinely satisfying.
