Cyborg 009 on the SNES is one of those Japan-only gems that feels like a weird, funky cousin of The Lost Vikings. You pick three cyborgs from the anime—each with their own quirks, like jet boots or stretchy arms—and swap between them to solve platforming puzzles. The controls are a little stiff by today’s standards, but there’s something charming about figuring out how to chain their abilities together just to get past a single spike trap.
It’s got that early ‘90s anime aesthetic, all bright colors and chunky sprites, and the music’s surprisingly catchy. Not gonna lie, some of the level design feels like it was meant to punish rental store customers, but if you’re into obscure action-puzzlers, it’s a neat little time capsule. Just don’t expect a walk in the park.
