About College Slam Basketball
College Slam came out for the Super Nintendo in 1996, published by Acclaim Entertainment. It was part of that wave of mid-90s sports games trying to capture the energy of college basketball, a time when developers were pushing the 16-bit hardware to its limits with bigger sprites and faster gameplay.
You control a team of five college players, running up and down the court to score more points than the opposing team. The main objective is to win each game by making baskets and playing defense. Signature mechanics include the turbo button for a temporary burst of speed, special dunks and alley-oops that trigger brief cutscenes, and a momentum system where making consecutive shots can swing the game in your favor. The pacing is fast, and the computer opponents can be surprisingly aggressive on higher difficulties. It feels like a chaotic, slightly unpredictable arcade version of basketball where a single steal can turn the whole game around.
