I first played Cokemon, a hack of Pokemon Blue, on the original Game Boy. It was released in 2000, though I'm not sure who made it. It's one of those many fan modifications that appeared, letting you revisit Kanto with some significant, and often strange, changes to the familiar formula.

You control a young trainer on a quest, but your goal is to collect and battle with a roster of creatures that have been heavily altered from the original game. The core loop remains exploring the world screen by screen, talking to NPCs, and navigating tall grass to find wild creatures. Signature mechanics include encountering a completely different set of monsters and dealing with a modified difficulty curve that can feel unpredictable. The pacing is uneven, with some sections being surprisingly easy and others presenting sudden, sharp spikes in challenge. It feels like navigating a distorted, slightly off-kilter version of a world you thought you knew.
