About Cliffhanger
Cliffhanger came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, published by Sony Imagesoft. It was part of that wave of games based on action movies, trying to capture the feel of the film on the 16-bit hardware. You don't see it mentioned as often as some other SNES titles from that period, but it had a solid presence on rental store shelves.
You control Gabe Walker, the mountain rescuer played by Sylvester Stallone in the movie, navigating through side-scrolling levels. Your main goal is to survive the mountain terrain and defeat the terrorists who have taken over a U.S. Treasury facility. The gameplay involves a lot of careful platforming across icy ledges and treacherous gaps, combined with punch and kick combat against enemy guards. You also get to use a climbing axe to scale certain rock faces, which adds a different kind of movement. The game moves at a deliberate pace, demanding precision over speed, and the difficulty can be punishing if you misjudge a jump. Playing it feels like a tense, methodical climb where every step matters.
