About Cliffhanger (europe)
Cliffhanger came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, published by Sony Imagesoft. It was part of that wave of movie tie-in games that tried to capture the big screen experience on a 16-bit console, and it landed right in the middle of the SNES's busy life.
You control Gabe Walker, the mountain rescuer from the film, navigating side-scrolling levels. Your main goal is to stop a group of thieves who have stolen millions from the U.S. Treasury. The gameplay mixes brawling against various enemies with precise platforming across icy ledges and deep chasms. You punch, kick, and use a limited supply of throwing knives to fight, but the real challenge often comes from the jumps; mistiming a leap sends you falling to your death. The game is known for its demanding difficulty, where a single missed input can mean repeating a long section. Moving through the snowy mountains and caverns feels tense and requires careful attention to your footing.
