Cliff Hanger is one of those weird SNES games that feels like it shouldn’t work but somehow does. You play as a search and rescue guy who quickly realizes the "lost hikers" you’re sent to save are actually terrorists who crashed their plane full of stolen cash. Classic '90s action movie logic, right?

The first thing you’ll notice is how janky the controls are—running and jumping feels stiff, like your guy’s boots are made of lead. But after a few falls off the mountain (and there will be falls), you start getting the timing down. The levels are these sprawling, jagged cliffs with hidden paths and terrorists popping out of nowhere. Half the fun is stealing their guns and turning them against the bad guys mid-air.

It’s based on some obscure 1993 movie, so expect cheesy cutscenes and dialogue that makes zero sense. The scenery’s actually pretty cool for an SNES game—icy peaks, rickety bridges, caves with weirdly detailed shadows. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand. You’ll die a lot before figuring out where to go next.

If you can push past the clunky movement, there’s a weirdly satisfying challenge here. Just maybe keep a walkthrough handy.
