About Claymates
Claymates came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, a time when developers were really pushing what the system could do with colors and scaling effects. It was published by Interplay, and it fit right in with the platformers of that era, offering a bright, cartoonish world built around a simple but clever concept.
You control a boy named Clayton who has been turned into a ball of clay, and you roll him through a series of themed worlds. The main goal is to rescue your father from an evil mad scientist, which involves navigating many side scrolling levels. The signature mechanic is your ability to transform into different animals, like a mouse that can climb walls or a fish that can swim, by finding specific colored blobs. You explore the stages screen by screen, often needing to backtrack with a new form to reach previously inaccessible areas. The pacing is generally quick, though some sections require precise jumps and careful timing, making it a decent challenge. It feels like a puzzle platformer where your main tool is your own constantly changing shape.
