About Civilization
Civilization arrived on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, a conversion of the computer game published by MicroProse. On a console better known for action and platformers, it stood out as a methodical, long form strategy experience.
You guide a fledgling tribe from the Stone Age to the space age, managing cities, researching technologies, and negotiating with rival leaders. The main goal is to achieve dominance through military conquest, technological supremacy, or diplomatic means. Key mechanics include exploring a large world map tile by tile, founding cities to produce units and buildings, and engaging in turn based tactical combat. The pacing is deliberately slow, demanding careful planning over many hours, and the difficulty comes from competing empires that expand and declare war. It feels like conducting a grand, patient experiment with history.
