About Civilization (beta)
Civilization (Beta) came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by MicroProse. It was one of the few strategy games of its kind on the console, a time when platformers and action titles dominated the shelves. You take control of a fledgling civilization, guiding it from the dawn of history into the space age. The goal is to outlast your rivals, either by conquering every other civilization, achieving a technological victory by launching a spaceship, or simply having the highest score when the final year ticks over.
You manage cities, direct settlers to build new ones, and research technologies that unlock new units and city improvements. A key part of the game is exploring the world, which is shrouded in a black fog of war, and dealing with rival leaders through diplomacy or warfare. The pacing is deliberate and slow, demanding careful long-term planning as you balance your economy, military, and scientific research. It feels like a massive, intricate puzzle where every decision echoes for centuries.
