Chrono Trigger came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995, developed by Square. It was one of those late generation SNES games that really pushed what the system could do, sitting alongside other big role playing games of that era. You get a sense of its ambition right from the start.

You control Crono, a young man from a quiet town, who gets pulled into a time traveling adventure after a teleporter mishap at the Millennial Fair. Your main goal is to prevent a world ending disaster by traveling between different eras, from prehistory to a far future wasteland. The combat happens right on the exploration screen without a separate battle transition, and you can combine your party members' abilities into powerful double and triple techs. You explore areas screen by screen, talk to people whose lives change across time, and delve into dungeons that often have multi era puzzles. The pacing is brisk for a role playing game, and the difficulty feels fair, more about strategy than grinding. Moving through the ages and seeing how your small actions ripple forward gives the whole journey a surprising sense of weight.
