Chou Makaimura—or Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts if you played it outside Japan—is one of those classic SNES games that'll make you question your life choices after the fifth death in the first level. You play as Arthur, a knight in heart-shaped boxers, fighting through waves of zombies, demons, and flying eyeballs that just won’t leave you alone.
The controls feel a little stiff at first (good luck changing direction mid-jump), but once you get the rhythm down, there’s something weirdly satisfying about bouncing between platforms while tossing lances at giant crows. And yeah, you’ll probably rage-quit when you realize you have to beat the whole thing twice to see the real ending. Still, the pixel art holds up—those gothic castles and swamp monsters ooze creepy charm.
Just don’t expect a chill time. This game plays for keeps.
