About Championship Pool (europe)
Championship Pool came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, a time when sports sims were finding a solid footing on the console. It was published by Mindscape, a company that put out a number of titles across different genres. This one was their attempt to translate the quiet tension of pool into a 16-bit experience, joining other niche sports games on the platform.
You control a cue stick, positioning it around the table to line up shots. The main goal is to clear the table by pocketing all your assigned balls, either stripes or solids, and then sinking the eight ball. Two mechanics define the play: a power meter for setting shot strength and an aiming line that shows the cue ball's path. You spend your time carefully calculating angles, adjusting for spin, and trying not to scratch. The game moves at a deliberate pace, demanding patience over quick reflexes, and the computer opponents can be surprisingly sharp. It feels like a thoughtful puzzle disguised as a bar game.
