Castles is a simulation game released in 1991 for the MS-DOS platform. Developed by Quicksilver Software, Inc. and published by Interplay Productions, Inc., the game combines elements of fantasy and historical battle. Players take on the role of a lord tasked with expanding territorial control through the construction and management of fortified structures.

The core activity involves designing and building a series of castles to establish dominance across the land. Players first plan the layout of each castle, defining its outline with components such as walls, gatehouses, and towers. These pieces can be customized in height and thickness, and many can be equipped with defensive features like arrow slits for towers or cauldrons of boiling oil for walls. This design phase requires managing regional resources, as overly ambitious plans can deplete materials and halt construction. Once a design is finalized, the player must hire and manage a workforce, including specialists like masons and carpenters, setting wages to attract sufficient labor for each trade.

After workers are recruited, the player assigns them to specific castle segments to begin construction. Each segment progresses through multiple stages, starting with laying foundations, then adding layers of stone and necessary scaffolding, until the battlements are complete. The objective for each stage is to finish a full circuit of walls and towers, including a functional gate. Alongside this construction focus, players make broader strategic decisions that influence their standing with key factions such as the Church, nobles, and peasants. Maintaining a strong military, a sizable workforce, and a stable treasury are ongoing concerns integral to the campaign for territorial control.
