Captain Tsubasa IV came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed and published by Tecmo. It was part of that wave of Japanese sports games that never left the country, so you had to track down a cartridge import or a ROM to try it. This one continued the story of Tsubasa Ozora and his friends, picking up after their middle school adventures to follow them into the professional leagues.

You control Tsubasa and his teammates on a soccer field viewed from an overhead perspective. The main goal is to win matches and advance through the J-League, but the game is structured more like a role-playing adventure. You move your team across a world map, visiting different cities to trigger story events and challenge rival teams. The signature mechanics are the special moves, like the Drive Shot or the Overhead Kick, which you activate with button combinations during matches. You also manage your team's stamina and morale, which depletes as you use those powerful techniques. The pacing is deliberate, with a lot of time spent navigating menus and dialogue between the frantic, arcade-style soccer action. It feels like you are guiding a sports drama as much as you are playing a game.
