About Captain Novolin
Captain Novolin came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Sculptured Software. It was one of those games that stood out, not for its action or graphics, but for its purpose; it was created in partnership with a pharmaceutical company to educate players about diabetes management. On a system known for platformers and RPGs, this was a different kind of experience altogether.
You control a superhero named Captain Novolin, a diabetic who must rescue the mayor from aliens. The core of the game is managing your blood sugar. You navigate side scrolling levels, jumping on platforms and avoiding enemies, but you must periodically stop to check your glucose levels and inject insulin. Eating food items you find restores health, but sugary foods cause your blood sugar to spike, requiring immediate attention. The game is unforgiving; a miscalculation in your insulin timing can lead to a game over. It feels like a constant, stressful juggling act between platforming and a medical simulation.
