About Captain Novolin (en,fr,es)
Captain Novolin came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Sculptured Software. It was one of those early platformers on the system that tried to do something different, mixing a standard action game with a public health message about managing diabetes.
You control the superhero Captain Novolin, a character with diabetes who must rescue the mayor from aliens. The main objective is to navigate through side scrolling levels, jumping on platforms and avoiding enemies. Your health is tied to your blood sugar level, which you must monitor constantly; you collect food items like apples and sandwiches to raise it when it gets too low, and you use your insulin needle to shoot enemies. If your blood sugar drops too far or spikes too high, you lose a life. The pacing is deliberate, forcing you to stop and manage your condition even during enemy encounters. It feels like a constant balancing act between platforming action and a medical simulation.
