About Brandish (japan)
Brandish came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, published by Koei. It was part of that wave of console RPGs where developers were experimenting with different perspectives and control schemes, moving beyond the standard top-down or side-scrolling views that were common at the time.
You control a lone adventurer, Dela, exploring a vast, multi-level dungeon. Your main goal is to fight your way to the bottom, battling monsters and solving environmental puzzles. The game is played from an overhead view, but the screen rotates in 90-degree increments as you turn your character, which changes your orientation and the layout of the corridors. Combat is straightforward; you swing your sword or use a bow, but positioning is critical because you and enemies are constantly shifting your facing. The pacing is deliberate, and the dungeon can feel labyrinthine, demanding careful mapping and resource management. It creates a methodical, almost puzzle-like rhythm to the exploration and combat.
