Brandish came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, a release from Koei. It was part of that later wave of SNES games, the kind that felt a bit different from the usual platformers and RPGs dominating the system. You could tell it had its own ideas about how a dungeon should be explored.

You control a lone adventurer, dropped into a massive, multi-level labyrinth. Your goal is straightforward: delve to the bottom of this underground realm and defeat the sorceress who awaits you there. The game is played screen by screen, with a fixed isometric view that makes navigation a deliberate puzzle. You swing your sword or fire your bow at monsters that appear, but the real challenge often comes from the environment itself; you can rotate the entire playing field in ninety-degree increments, which constantly changes your perspective and reveals new paths. The pacing is slow and methodical, demanding careful mapping and resource management. It feels like a tense, solitary test of your spatial awareness and patience as you chip away at its depths.
